x Ages shows me that there's a dumb pattern of hyping newer titles that are far from established, though it's arguable KoDP was never quite a strategy game since it fits far more neatly into a management category. Not putting a Hearts of Iron title somewhere on that list is probably wrong too if you're gonna have Paradox grand strat titles, let alone Vicky.
...And I've gone and learned to play Shadow Empire now (pinback had been posting about it) and it likely belongs on any such a list; certainly War in the East does if you want to define 'best' as 'most sophisticated and compelling simulationist depiction' but that's some Qt3 BS. Let's just go with another game made by the Shadow Empire guy that does a good job of being a wargame, doesn't shirk from the darker aspects of the war in Europe that wargamers glorify while glossing over the brutality of it, and pits the overambitious conniving bastard that came up with the blitz on one side versus the insane dictator on the other side. I've never seen a wargame where you have to contend with your generals being ground up by the paranoid destruction of the political machine you helped build on one side or blackmail your fellow officers with the threat of telling the world their secrets at a war crimes trial to get your share of gas for your army on the other.
Why is the Banner Saga on a strategy game list? It's even further from a strat than KoDP.
There's little innovation here. There's even less of a grasp on established titles for a best-of list. This list is bad. RPS is bad. |
