| Emergence
Radiolab is always fascinating and this is a Top 10 episode. In it, it's revealed that ants are basically tiny robots that don't know anything, feel anything, understand anything. The "organism" is the colony. All of us that read Ender's Game knew this already, but what we all intuitively get wrong and what Orson Scott Card got wrong is that there isn't some Smart Ant running the show: ants accomplish amazing things as a group while individually understanding nothing about what's happening. |
