Came downstairs a couple days ago to find a dead mouse. We have two cats, although one is 18 and sleeps on top of me at night. Our youngest/other cat, Clyde, hangs out downstairs at night. Whether it's because there are mice around or what, I dunno, but I assumed he killed the mouse.
One mouse, eh, it could happen to anyone. But I woke up this morning and heard ruckus and Clyde is doing that thing where he is toying with a mouse, batting it around, sitting on it, letting it go so he can corner it again. Just basically torturing the thing.
I know that if I let this thing go and kick it out of the house it will probably be back, but I also know that I am a bleeding heart. I decide to give it a chance - I grab a trash container, take the bag out so it's just the black plastic and place it on the floor facing the mouse. If it's intelligent enough to crawl inside, I'll chuck it outside, if it isn't I'll let Clyde kill the mouse. (I am slightly also worried about the mouse making Clyde sick somehow, but that's just fear on my part.)
The mouse scuttles into the trash can. There is literally a puzzle like this in the text adventure game "Knight Orc" so all these years of playing text games paid off I guess. I take the can outside, bang it once on the ground and the mouse scurries away into the forest. I know I am an idiot for doing this.
Some of this is inevitable due to where we live, but also, that sounds like something a mouse-laden loser would tell themselves. We don't really have food out except the cat food. We honestly do a really good job otherwise having food put away.
We have d-Con traps that I'll put where the cats can't get to it. Any of you guys ever have mouse issues?

Dogs are better than cats for getting rid of mice. A terrier scares them the fuck away. Cats are silent ninjas and unless they actually kill them all, the mice will keep coming.
We had a Briard that hoovered them up like M&Ms. Then she had a ball of dead mouse skeletons in her stomach that had to be removed. Yaaay mice. :( |
