Back before Star Wars was the monomyth of America, when we hadn't seen all the visual franchise components that are now iconic (star destroyers, walkers, troopers, fighters, cantinas, implants, droids, lightsabers, blue milk, whatever else), there was no fanbase to demand more of them just for the sake of satiating a desire to see more Star Wars delivered to them.
As soon as it got a following, every film was to a greater or lesser extent a fan film. And now Disney owns the franchise and wants to wring money from it so they made you (and me) Rogue One and they put all that shit in there, blended into a smooth liquid that we'd exchange for the entry fee. It is distinct from the rest of the franchise in its tone, in what sort of story it told; it was a tragic film in the definitive sense, in that everyone died at the end. That's been the definition of tragedy since Shakespeare, maybe since the Greeks.
This shift in tone was driven by the attempt by the new Franchise owners to appeal to fans, so that you'd sit in the theater and grunt in pleasure while you got an audiovisual lightshow full of all those elements. But this set of elements was never really necessary elements of the core heroic narrative, or the adventure they took us along for - they were just what the props and effects teams made to facilitate telling the story of some relatable young boomer yearning for adventure on his family farm. And it was ultimately a far saner, more wholesome worldview for the first-gen fanbase to yearn for adventure than for the current Rogue One fans (which I am one of) to crave all the trappings of the old adventure films in a story about futility, death, and another round of pointless sacrifice.
My writing is fine. Your brain's pretty bad tho, can't even do media analysis! 8D |
