In case you're wondering about the timeline, SimIraq was made by John Hiles, after Thinking Tools was disbanded. He was just really committed to the whole "serious sim" thing. I was hoping there'd be more information about it, but there really isn't a lot. Maybe it was classified?
Another thing I wanted to add, but I didn't have time, is that Will Wright actually didn't really believe in "serious sims." He was a fun-first kind of guy, and it shows in the design of SimCity. This is actually how you make a commercially successful game, I think. It has to actually be fun. So it's maybe surprising that Maxis even bought the group that would later be spun out as Thinking Tools. I can only attribute it to the early 1990s irrational exuberance.

I suppose if VR can make a comeback, maybe serious sims and other 90s ideas can too? We've only got like 5 or 6 ideas here, people. We've gotta reuse them somehow. |
