This is going to make me sound like a gun nut and I'm not, but you got me wondering:
I read an article a while back by a guy named Stephen Hunter about why the AK-47 is the gun of choice of terror groups, and he said the the wooden buttstock, handguard, and heat guard give it a humble carpenter aesthetic that makes it appealing to guerrilla fighters.
The Garand also has a wood stock, and unlike the AK, it's a semi-auto with only eight rounds, better than one but not too many. It's exact but limited, like the Halo pistol - rifle power and precision without having to reload after every shot. But you still have to make the shots count.
Then it ejects the spent clip out of the top of the with a ching that should be covered by copyright.
