Linux Weekly News weighs in on Stallman's cancellation.

There is a long discussion about whether Stallman asking women out constituted harassment. I have to say, I am on Stallman's side here. It's not like he was in a position of power over any of the people he asked out. He might be a weird dude, but he ought to be allowed to ask women on dates.

According to coriordan, though, none of his advances worked out. He seems to imply that RMS was an incel for 15 years.

I remember collecting him from an airport, around 2004, and he asked me if I knew any women that might be interested in him. I laughed it off because it was an unusual question, but then I realised that he's lonely and he knows women aren't going to just throw themselves at him. Time's not on your side when you're 52 (in 2004), constantly travelling, and lacking a social skill. Fifteen years later, his lack of success has proven he was right that finding a sweetheart (his word) was going to be difficult.

Handing out "pleasure cards" probably didn't help. (It's not a business card because he's not employed by a business, get it?)

There is a lot of discussion over who will be the "next pope" for the free software movement. Whoever it is could theoretically come up with a GPLv4 that might move things in a different direction... and existing software using the "or later" clause could easily be relicensed to this new version.

donbarry sees a conspiracy to co-opt the Free Software movement.

There are literally billions of dollars at stake in who controls the next version of the GPL license for the large body of code that enacts the "or later" clause in their invocation of the license. And it's quite noticeable that those companies which are most hostile to the FSF have their figures, well known or not, playing a significant part in throwing stones at the pilloried Stallman.

Some have called for replacing the entire FSF board. And yet nowhere do they declare what the requirements should be for such service, other than mandating gender, race, and other superficial identities. Besides the outright call for racialism defining the choice, there's absolutely no discussion as to what the future FSF leader and board members should represent *politically* in the defense of the goals of the FSF.

And this is by design.

Manufactured sex scandals are very useful to hide political attacks while evading accountability for them, and have been for centuries.

On the other hand, fanselm is enthusiastic about finding a less smelly leader for the movement:

From a practical POV, I think that finding somebody [to lead the FSF] whose personal hygiene conforms to the generally accepted standard would be a start. This is an area where someone could reasonably be expected to tolerate some personal inconvenience (for example, regular showers and doing the laundry) for the overall benefit of the organisation one is employed to represent. After all, if one's BO is bothering people they are less likely to listen to what one has to say on behalf of one's employer.

At the end, everyone gathers around for a long discussion about why Firefox doesn't run well on someone's 4 GB laptop.
