Are you someone on JoltCountry? wrote:
Yeah, I helped try to sell some of their Intellectual Property during the spinning down the drain era. These fuckers had invented digital photography early enough that they could have owned the market - but intentionally shoved it in a drawer so as to not hit film sales. Now I think the only film they make is commercial film for movies. There are vast parking lots in north west Rochester that used to be buildings.
I only knew a few personally, had a few meetings with Kodak people but I never worked for them. I'm in the business.
Anyway, I've heard that a lot, they threw the patents in some drawer in the back, but it all wasn't actually hidden away at all, it was just out on a different table. I'm telling you these guys didn't shut up about digital, all about the future and how film was the past. They had the patents out of the drawer and would wave them around over their heads. Kodak was always about the processing labs, that was (and still is) their main focus, they saw labs as their actual customers, so that's where they were evangelizing digital photography. Get the labs to adopt it and the photographers would follow. In 1994 I was the rare guy having a blast photoshopping on a program better than Photoshop 3.0, set up on a sweet Silicon Graphics workstation with a giant neg scanner and film recorder. All underwritten by Kodak. I did mention to the lab manager it was all very cool and made my knees weak and everything, but in 6 or 7 years I could buy a cheap PC as good as any of these machines. How would they make back all the money they invested? This wasn't just a computer in the corner, they had us set up with a big digital lab with drum scanners and 6 workstations for retouching. See, I had it explained: Kodak were just heavily invested in digital as the future, so they weren't investing in computers so much as a position to be in when digital exploded. They did their figuring, and saw a way to continue to make money without any negative processing, and it all could have worked, the stuff they had planned, things Google ended up doing only more halfassed....
The market crashed. Instead of studios slowly dying out, half of them were wiped out within two years, and then studios continued to slowly close shop. The margins on the photo paper were suddenly gone, not just processing chemicals. Nobody could have seen it coming like this. They might have survived if not for the crash, but there's frankly nothing anyone could have done to save them. |
