The girlfriend dies before the one hour mark, leaving them at their lowest point for the end of act two. That's when the father and son have their big emotional reckoning, sing Let the Sun Shine together, and now they're a real squad - a Suicide Squad - and they're going to stop whoever from doing the thing or die trying. It's kind of poetic that all their issues came from a dead mom and a dead girlfriend and in the end they bond over killing a third unrelated woman.
