The cool thing about the FF is they're not crimefighters or vigilantes like Superman or Batman, they're a science adventure team like The Challengers of the Unknown. (Yeah they're a science adventure team that's also a family, like the Quests or Space Family Robinson, but I feel that element gets way too much play these days. I guess because family stories are more relatable and/or require less imagination to draw?) All the classic Kirby FF antagonists have a science adventure built right in: the Moleman (under the earth, Subterrania!), Namor (under the sea, Atlantis!), Dr. Doom (behind the iron curtain, Latveria!), Klaw (darkest africa, Wakanda!), The Inhumans (the lost city, Attilan!), The Skrulls (another world, Skrullos!), Annihilus (another dimension, The Negative Zone!), Psycho-Man (smaller than an atom, The Microverse!), Kang the Conqueror (time travel!), The Puppet Master (mind control!), The Silver Surfer (outer SPAAACE!). The only time the FF isn't being awesome is when they're being a shitty Justice League, like in all the movies, or shitty X-Men, like in all the comics post-Silver Age.
On top of that, Ben Grimm is the definitive Marvel character, and the first character who should've been guaranteed a roster slot in every Marvel vs. Capcom game. His whole raison d'ĂȘtre is going the distance in a fight because he's got more heart than anybody, like Rocky if Rocky was literally made out of rocks. That's the kind of guy you want on your side when the fate of two worlds hang in the balance. Sucks that he's a fuckin' kike but what are you gonna do? |
