The original trilogy was fun, but I never understood why people idolized it so much. It's just a space opera with good special effects (for the era). It's pretty obvious who is on Team Good and who is on Team Evil from the get-go, and how the whole thing is going to play out. Han Solo is the only interesting character, because there is some uncertainty about what side he will choose. There is a lot of 70s science fiction that is just more interesting than Star Wars: Zardoz, Dark Star, Solaris, the list goes on.
The prequels were just embarrassing. It was like reading a 1,000-page doorstopper by some first-time science fiction author with no sense of pacing, dramatic tension, or plot. There was a huge amount of time spent on describing some obscure trade dispute that no normal human could ever possibly give a shit about. Plus characters with names like "Count Dooku" or "Darth Sidious." Gee, I wonder if Archduke Badguy Evilface is going to betray our heroes in Act 4. HMM I WONDER. Plus the huge facepalm of trying to explain the Force through "midichlorians." Bacteria, folks. This is the Farce.
The prequels were bad movies that weren't fun to watch. There was something oddly endearing about them, though. They were at least Lucas' honest effort to fill in the blanks of his universe. And the dumb shit in there, like Jar Jar or breakdancing Jedis, at least had personality. And personality goes a long way. Even bad art is at least art. The new stuff is just corporate "product." It feels dead. Hopefully soon we can stop talking about it. |
