More than any other person, George Washington is responsible for the fact that there even is a United States in the first place, and for a lot of our democratic traditions. He easily could have ruled as a Napolean-style dictator or just been president for life if he had wanted to, but he took a different path.
Yes, he is a symbol, but symbols are important. Gay marriage is mostly a symbolic thing anyway, and I don't remember most people here claiming that was unimportant. You wouldn't argue that KKK symbols are harmless either. So stop trying to have your cake and eat it too.
Also, a slight tweak to the gigantic bureaucratic turd pile that is Dodd-Frank? Really? That's your burning issue that we should all be focusing on? Nobody cares except finance nerds and the offenderati who hate everything to do with banks reflexively. |
