On the topic of Horizon Chase, I enjoyed reading how the developers managed to simulate a one-dimensional race course in a three-dimensional engine. Apparently it was really hard! The main reason Mode 7 racers like Super Mario Kart were so much more realistic than traditional sprite-scalers like OutRun or Top Gear was because the courses were fully two-dimensional; crossing the apex of a corner meant travelling a shorter distance than hugging the outside wall. Super Mario Kart was the first time I can remember feeling like I was actually steering a car, instead of simply toggling between turning / not turning states. Back then it seemed like a pretty unambiguous improvement. It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize games weren't getting better every year, they were only getting more diverse. |
