The Oxford English Dictioary attempts to be the most comprehensive dictionary in the world. It wants to cover every word that has ever or will ever exist. It is the go-to reference for checking out obsolete words, because its operation with words is similar to the Hotel California's operation with people: they can go in at any time, but they willnever leave. Thee Oxford English Dictionary never removes a word.
The Second Edition, published in 1989, is 21,789 pages in 20 volumes, and contains references for 59 million words; it is also available in an electronic edition. According to Wikipedia, the third edition, which is under production, will probably never be printed and only exist as an electronic edition.
