It was on sale and apparently this is the feature-complete version just prior to 1.0.
Yeah, this is the game Rogue Legacy was supposed to be. It's not Strider 2-fast like I hoped, but in retrospect it was silly expecting that kind of speed from a game that's all about being Castlevania.
The whole Metroidvania-like marketing gimmick is pure BS. Levels are wide open, but once you pass through a stage you're done. The main thing "metroid-y" about the game is killing unique enemies throughout the game unlocks new powers that allow you to take alternate routes or uncover hidden treasure on subsequent playthroughs.
I see the Flashback comparison, but I'd say even more the animation reminds me of Prince of Persia, all the way down to the protagonist's pantaloons.
If you want Castlevania without the pixels, Bloodstained: The Ritual of the Night is coming out soon. But the gameplay isn't nearly as fast as this. |
