So it turns out the cold meter isn't something you don't have to worry about as long as it doesn't grow the size of your health bar, it actually reduces your current max health! I was flying at the highest altitude trying to get away from fighters when a pinprick strafing pass incapacitated every single crew member! I was too shocked to take a screenshot of that aftermath, but I did take one of the after aftermath.
