The three grocery stores near me have six or seven lanes that could be staffed by a human. They have one person working those lanes. No more than one person at all times, 100% of the time (sometimes, if you go late enough, there are no people running lanes). They have self-service stations, which are terrible because you have to go there with everything, even if you're getting a month's worth of groceries. There isn't enough space on the scale to put all the groceries, so the machine will stop letting you scan items if it detects that the weight goes down. This means that the person overseeing the self-service stations has to come over and flash her badge at the thing.
It probably doesn't take that long to put up with this, but it's hard to not look at the empty lanes and think, "Safeway would rather leave these empty and save minimum wage x 8 hours a day x the 6 empty lanes because the only consequence of doing this is that everyone is in the store for an extra half-hour. What are they going to do, NOT buy groceries at our store? Baaah-hahaha!"
It's been over five years. They aren't going to put more cashiers there. So sometimes I'll get a healthy meal delivered to the house that I can stick in the oven, sure. I'd rather wait 40 minutes for it to cook than go to the grocery store that evening for the same time.
