I'm not very far into the game, but last time I waited to give a proper review people here missed out on a big sale so I'm giving an impression early. SGW right now is on deep discount at GOG until Monday.
It's a third-person pauseable real time capital starship adventure/strategy game. The game starts out with you controlling your individual ship and leveling up through trading and freelance missions like a normal elite-clone. Then at some point you become the leader of a faction and begin conquering the star system Mount & Blade-style.
Many reviews say if you didn't like Starpoint Gemini 2, you won't like this game. I wish to amend that to say if you came close to liking SG2, but its flaws were just too many to bear, you may like SGW because it's a complete and total improvement over the last game. The graphics are prettier, the music is better, interface bloat has been trimmed, the dull and depressing aesthetic of SG2 has been replaced with a vibrant and colorful one, hell, even the engine runs smoother!
There is a much steeper learning curve for this game than rebel galaxy, but it's a much deeper game overall. You steer your ship with WASD. You have four quadrants of shields and turret batteries, each with their own separate power supply. You need to shift power levels between weapons, energy, and shields to fight efficiently. You can set your turrets to autofire, but they're more accurate and hit harder when you fire them manually. And on top of that your captain has four active skills to use in combat. Once you wrap your head around it, it's far less hectic than it all sounds. Just as a protip, do not use direct mouse steering in combat.
So yeah, pleasantly surprised by how much better my first impression of this game is than SG2, and it's on sale this weekend. Dunno if it'll piss me off once the galactic conquest stuff is unlocked so caveat emptor!
