Microsoft Edge is Safer Than Firefox. Yeah, it is. When 'doesn't work'='safer' by Commander Tansin A. Darcos 09/24/2017, 3:06am PDT
Every so often I get a pop-up notice from Edge - Microsoft's rebranding of Internet Explorer - telling me how it's 'safer' than Firefox. So, I'd like to see how it works. So I click on the 'e' icon in the task bar. The blue window opens, then closes, and that's it. No action, no web browsing, no nothing. Probably installed incorrectly or something.

Yeah, an application that quits without performing any useful activity is obviously safer than one that works, but unfortunately we need applications that actually do things.

This reminds me of a story from about 30 years ago. One of the most significant computer systems from the 1970s - 1990s were the PDP-11 minicomputers from Digital Equipment Corporation ("DEC"). Depending on the size you bought, you could get an 11/03 which would support 4 terminals using the RT-11 operating system, to an 11/34 which could handle upwards of 20 or more terminals using RSTS/E, or the 11/70 which could handle 60+ terminals on RSTS/E. Each terminal had an identifying number, from the master console, KB0: all the way to KB127: (with terminal numbers above 64 as virtual terminals). There were reports of a so-called "extremely secure mode" of RSTS/E where, once timesharing was started, pressing a key on the keyboard of any terminal except KB0: would cause the machine to crash.

Yeah, the computer is very secure but this kind of bug made the machine unusable.
