The writing on the wall says the Ys VIII PC port is fucked, extra month of patching or no, so ICJ paid me off with this game instead.
Yeah, there's no coming back to Star Hammer: Vanguard Prophecy after this. It's the same engine, but there are so many improvements to the system and broken rules fixed. For instance, in Star Hammer, you could put full power to engines and gain ridiculous amounts of speed and maneuverability making it next to impossible to box enemies in, in this game putting power to engines will get you a boost to forward speed, but a major loss to maneuvers. Missiles and torpedoes are more plentiful and play a much bigger role in this game, hopefully they'll replicate the squids' ability to make it difficult for the player to set the perfect firing line.
Like Sanctus Reach, the campaign seems to be a mix of scripted missions and random skirmishes. Do NOT mistake the map screen for anything even close to a 4X, it's more just a source of context for the tactical battles this game is all about.
Shades of Ace Combat, the real carrot in this game is after a mission's complete, you get to sit back rewatch your strategy in real time with AI-controlled camera angles mimicking the shaky cam of the series, including fighter-eye views of the action and dramatic zooms on the money shots.
My main complaint is the aesthetic shift from Star Hammer's bright and colorful outer space to BG's gritty brown-o-vision.
I'll write a more detailed review after I get more playtime. |
