I'd say this is the first update that's a step forward from the dumpster fire of 1.0 instead of a step sideways. The graphics look nicer and run better (still runs like stuttery shit compared to Shadow Warrior 2). The weird thing is increasing FOV actually seems to improve performance. Being able to fly close to the ground makes a big difference. You actually CAN do a barrel roll under a floating island like in the E3 trailer now. They appear to have shitcanned the terrible plot from 1.0 with something new, but I suspect it's gonna turn out to be a disappointing "it was all a dream" in the form of "it was all a virtual reality simulation."
Unfortunately I still think the game sucks. It doesn't help that right before trying this update I was playing Dragon's Dogma and AIM 2, two open world games far less ambitious in their worldbuilding but far superior in the actual gameplay within their worlds. I gleefully picked up a quest to kill five sentinels for 50,000 units (why do they use the same term for currency and distance?) but carrying out the quest sucked. The combat in this game is so boring right now. I got into a dogfight with some sentinel fighters after stealing a gravino ball, but I don't think my starting ship was up to the challenge of sentinels, so I don't have a strong opinion on the improved dogfighting yet. The gun effects are much nicer. I'm still in the tutorial-esque stage of the game so I don't know whether fleet battles have been implemented yet or not.
Getting better. If by Christmas they have a patch that makes animals do more than just derp around in aimless circles and improves the ground combat I may say they finally delivered on their promise, but this is still effectively an early access game. |
