Yes, but.

Right now there are QA issues that are preventing me from recommending the game to anyone. There are issues with save slots and the character creation feature (called the Library in-game). I am certain those will be fixed shortly, and I will update this thread when it has happened.

It is difficult to recommend this to anyone who hasn't completed multiple CRPGs. You have to love blobbers. It is one of my favorite genres so I like this a great deal. It seems that the author finished playing Wizardry 7, started work on this game and didn't really look at other RPGs or other more-modern games in the meantime for any sort of inspiration. An analogy I used in talking to a friend the other night is that of the DeLorean DMC-12 and Soviet computer that Tetris was created on, for cars and computers: I am fascinated by the fact that there was this alternative car manufacturer in the 80s that did things their own way. All the stuff we take for granted now in cars is a bit different from what I remember learning about the DMC. The same with footage that is out there of the original version of Tetris. It is something close to what we are familiar with, but there is this alternate-universe-like take on it.

This is a game that has absolutely been developed for 20 years. He wasn't kidding. The UI is his, uniquely his and while it seems initially overwhelming, in every instance so far I've been able to say, "I understand what he is going for and now it makes sense."

There is so much to explore. I am getting the same feeling I got from it when I first played Doom. A few months ago I bought the new Prey game. I started it and saw that there was going to be an intro with mediocre writing that failed to make me care about the character and within 5 minutes pretty much knew what the entire game would be like. I have no idea what might come next with this game. On a square-to-square basis, even.

I don't know what to tell you regarding its price. I have been backing up my game directories when I've stopped playing so I am unaffected by all the tangential bullshit. There are people crying about what a terrible game it has to be- they are wrong. There are people crying about what an ugly game it is - they are wrong. There are people criticizing the sound - yes, they are correct to do that, I'll give them that one.

It provides a sensation of accomplishment. At lower levels nothing is given to you. There are fan-made guides for it and I recommend reading every single one. It has a charming sense of wonder that few other games do. It's been worth it in money and time for me so far.
