It's more X-Com than 4X by Mischief Maker 07/06/2017, 9:04pm PDT
Are you unequipping your dudes between expeditions? You know as the game moves on there are random events back home and if you're caught with your pants down (literally) you're fucked.

PROTIP: Constructing equipment and buildings produces research points depending on the rarity of materials used. Spears are a great early game unlock because they're cheap to build, light so even your wimpy dudes can carry them, and insanely useful thanks to their interrupt ability.

The quality of catalyst used in constructing items increases the chance of producing a high quality item (requires workshop). As far as I can tell there is no advantage in using high quality catalysts for buildings.

Human warriors can equip two-handed swords one-handed. Front or back row, put their excess of shield points to use. Shield points are more important than armor points. Some demihumans have other equipment advantages, find out from mouseover popups over their class icon.

When choosing materials to construct weapons, poison damage is better than leech damage is better than regular damage.

In the very early game you should pack up your entire village for expeditions (clicking the triangle button will auto move all your shit to the expedition's inventory) to maximize cards for use in challenges without risking thieves running off with valuable materials or children growing up alone in Ostoya and getting outnumbered in challenges. Pastures and wells are great for providing passive resources during your early game absence but become obsolete in the late game.

Magic is Thea's equivalent of X-Com's psi powers. Magic challenges always produce the best rewards. Once your dudes are all reasonably equipped, prioritize getting the totem up so they can start gaining magic skill points from town events.

Time is not your friend in Thea. Killing wandering mobs slows the enemy progression but eventually you get smushed by hordes of giants if you dawdle advancing the plot.

Try to gather on the go outside the village by saving an action point or two at the end of each round rather than sitting on a resource deposit for several turns. Movement generates events and advances the plot so you can keep up with enemy force escalation.

Finally, you are not playing the real game if it's not a custom difficulty game with the "realism" set to normal.

Man, responding to you makes me want to reinstall this game, I love it so!
