Here's an interesting experiment. Bring up this address in another browser window: 1618 Long Beach Blvd, Long Beach, CA. I was looking at this area because I had a bit of nostalgia and wanted to see how it now looks. It's about a half mile from where I lived on 340 W. 15th, 45 years ago. I later lived a few blocks further up the road one block over on Locust Street. I literally do not recognize the area any more. But anyway, as Google Earth shows in the top left corner, this photo was taken in April 2016, so it's about 13 months old. Notice the brick building clearly marked "New City Public Schools, 1637 Long Beach Blvd" Now, if you click on the grass, the view changes to indicate in the Google Earth address mark in the top left corner that it's now "1633 Long Beach Blvd," and this is from May, 2016, one year ago.
In the one month between the times these two pictures were taken, whatever business New City was running in that building - publishing company, charter school, whatever - closed, because now that same building no longer has any lettering on it.
It's also interesting to turn left and go up north about two blocks to the Pacific Coast Highway light rail station, located in the median. The Light rail was still in the planning stages and construction had not even started when I was living in Long Beach around 1987.
While I can clearly expect changes over 30 years, sometimes even one month is enough to have noticeable ones.
This little trip down memory lane has reminded me of many things I had forgotten. Especially in other places. There used to be a railroad track. The "exempt" part - discontinued service - which ran south east from Long Beach Blvd 1/2 block north of Willow, has been reclaimed for many things including parking, storage and house lots. It's noticable as a diagonal strip in satellite view. |
