I liked the first one, I gave it, say, a 3-ish out of five(?). It was cute, I liked Rocket and Groot, I thought the dialog was funny, the 70s music thing was fun, Zoe Saldana looked fantastic, etc etc. Its biggest demerit was that it had a stupid worthless villain (most Marvel movies have very good villains, that's one of the reasons they're exciting).
GotGv2 isn't funny. Half of the jokes are dudes talking about their dicks and the other half are Drax negging a cliched submissive asian chick. So it didn't have that going for it.
More importantly, though, tonally it's a fucking mess. They couldn't decide if it was a wacky character comedy like the first one or a more serious Captain America-style sci fi action thriller and decided to just be both. Maybe I'm overly sensitive to scores, but basically they were like LET'S BE A FUN META-COMIC MOVIE *turns on 70s song* NOW LET'S BE A SERIOUS SUPERHERO PUNCHING MOVIE *dunting film music*, repeat forever.
Then out of nowhere they decided to make it end on a maudlin note, trying to jerk tears that were in no way earned by the preceding movie. Very weird.
There are two set pieces (one - the opening credits - set to ELO and one set to Jay and the Americans) that worked great and showed how the whole movie should have gone. Instead they had to force in all this shitty humor that didn't work and an overly heavy-handed theme (FAMILY) that also didn't work.
Verdict: Negative!
P.S. Too many of these things climax by attempting to get us to the edge of our seats, wondering whether the whole team will escape that exploding building. :( |
