Missions are more varied, breaking out of the shoot-shoot-getaway box The Lost and Damned spent its entire running time trapped inside. Cutscenes are better staged. Your character is younger and less Jewish than the last guy, plus his friends are more stereotypically gay (which is what I wanted out of the motorcycle gang to begin with).
Combat is better because there's more ammo lying around, and they start you closer to the top of the weapon ladder instead of all the way back at the bottom. The Lost and Damned was almost over by the time you got an assault rifle; Gay Tony is giving explosive shells for your fully automatic shotgun a few missions in. The shooting itself still amounts to manually edging around cover (the sticky cover system adds too much animation delay to be useful) until you see a few pixels of the enemy, then pulling the trigger and hoping your bullets don't catch on whatever it is you're mostly standing behind. PROTIP: Don't forget to top up your health and buy a bulletproof vest before starting the mission, and then go do it again every time you have to retry.
The driving still sucks. Police chases - which really ought to be the heart of a game called Grand Theft Auto, instead of cover-based shooting - aren't very fun. Part of the problem is the police aren't persistent enough (not in the sense that they give up too easily, I mean they despawn too quickly, only to respawn somewhere else entirely) and part of the problem is there just aren't enough cops (send more cops). I think there's a limit of three or four cruisers in existence simultaneously, like baddies in the SNES port of Final Fight, when there really needs to be ten or more of them (like in the arcade version of Final Fight). I want a Blues Brothers quantity of cop cars all crashing into each other and ramping into the air for no earthly reason. I want to be trailing as many blue circles on the minimap as blue squares in Geometry Wars, and I don't care what the developers have to sacrifice to do it. Daytona USA had 40 cars on the same circuit; Rockstar should make the part of Gay Tony I haven't played yet more like Daytona USA. |
