I liked Get Out but its universal acclaim led me to expect a classicby Fullofkittens 03/05/2017, 6:30pm PST
, which it is not. It's a good horror movie, not a great one.
I felt like It Follows had something subtly interesting to say about horror movies from a feminist perspective and I appreciated it for that reason, and Get Out is...a little less subtle but is still interesting in that way from an African-American perspective. Maybe the lack of subtlety is a good thing: my MAGA coworker that wouldn't agree that It Follows is a feminist vampire movie or that Frozen is about coming out walked in the day after seeing it and said "It was interesting to think about how those people might feel about groups of people like me," which, holy shit, looks like Diff'rent Strokes is back on the air you guys!
As a horror movie, it's engaging enough to sit through and enjoy but - like It Follows - it's not going on any list of Greatest Horror Movies. It's not scary; the social commentary is the most interesting thing about it. I did think Betty Gabriel's performance was off-the-charts awesome, no spoilers but she has an amazing monologue, totally riveting.
As usual I agree with Jay from RLM: it's an excellent feature-length Tales from the Crypt episode.
