| Combine audio and video and Ethernet and everything into one cable and eliminate the rat's nest of wiring behind TVs? And you could control all of your devices through one remote if they were interconnected through HDMI and supported that standard. It's such a nice idea.
I have an AV receiver and a TV. Originally, I plugged everything into the receiver and had it sending video to the TV. However, my receiver wouldn't pass an HDR signal from the PS4 to the TV. So I switched everything around so that everything plugged into the TV and it sent audio to the receiver. Now the TV wouldn't send the surround signal from the Wii-U. It also limited what kind of audio was sent from the PS4. Who the fuck designs electronics that don't just have a straight pass-through for data it's not actually processing? An hour and a half of internet searching and settings menus and swapping wires around, I'm now back to a convoluted nest of cables and 10 remotes and input switching. I was talking to someone about this earlier and it dawned on them that they weren't getting surround from their Switch, and they discovered a capture card in their chain wasn't passing along the signal. The common consumer is totally fucked and probably doesn't even realize they're missing anything. This is like when Fussbett and INC were talking about a store clerk trying to explain firmware updates to some guy who just wanted to watch a blu-ray. 30 years ago you could plug your Nintendo into a TV and it pretty much just worked. Now you need a fucking PhD to play the new Zelda. So I guess this is a PSA to check all of your device connections to see that you're actually getting the optimal video/audio signals you thought you were. |
