| SPOILERS, but the entire game is predictable as fuck so who cares?
The cover shooting is pretty awful and definitely I was right when I guessed Binary Domain was better. Though this is probably the best version of Manhunt ever released complete with all the horrible violence you can stomach. The enemies are stupidly short sighted but the game still manages to be difficult since they have incredibly sharp vision other times. The story is almost funny and feels like it either this is the shittiest thing ever written or a setup for maybe the funniest joke in gaming. Basically the game revolves around gruff career capital D Daddy Joel being saddled with a girl who reminds him of his dead daughter which is the worst thing in the world to him. She also is the Last Best Hope For Humanity since she's immune to the zombie plague. You travel from dead end to dead end in maybe one of the most predictable plots you'll ever see. The overarching goal is to get her to some area where she can be studied and a cure can be created. Along the way you brutally murder various raiding parties and soldiers whom are also brutal murderers so it's ok. Then once you finally make it to the hospital it turns out they have to kill Ellie to get the cure so Joel does what he does best and kills everyone, including a Surgeon who limply raises a scalpel against him to rescue Ellie. He proceeds to lie to her about the fact that she possibly could save humanity and says there isn't a cure. The whole thing is played straight even though it becomes more and more obvious that both Joel and Ellie are essentially wasteland psychos by the end of the story. Coherent wasteland psychos but psychos all the same. I think the story would have been a lot better if they wrote Joel as a wasteland psycho from the beginning and just made ellie fall into his hands. Then his teaching her how to brutally murder would have been a lot more sweet and his destroying the last bastion for humanity to save his daughter would have made more sense. |
