Entropy Stew called it a physics simulator, only he used a more elegant term than I can recall. The fun of knocking a ball around is intrinsic in us. I think it's a big part of why market forces can't truly kill off pinball. I played (for me) a good amount of Rocket League and then stopped but brought it up again this weekend as my nephew was over. He's nine and took to the game instantly in 4x4 bot mode.
I found that since I stopped playing they have continued to add arenas and playmodes. He found a setting where a giant hockey puck was used instead of a ball. Awesome. He found arenas that aren't meant to replicate real ones at all - they look like something out of a good recent cyberpunk movie (or to put it another way, a good movie that doesn't even exist, har har). One of them had a hill on the side of the arena. I love that. It's like Minute Maid Park but for video games.
I'm in some ways surprised that they continued to add features. I know they must have made millions, but they had by far, by FAAAAR the best game of 2015 and I'm hard pressed to think of anything that has come out since that is both better and better-supported. Oh, except of course for No Man's Sk-
the dark and gritty...Ice Cream Jonsey! |
