I wouldn't be surprised if many whales, in different circumstances, would have been gambling addicts.
I was getting arcade games and pinball tables at a pretty good clip for a while. There was an ever-growing "hunger," for lack of a better word that would start to grow a bit after getting one. At some point I had the same rationale that the dude in the article did: if I sell stuff I've already purchased and just use THAT money for fun stuff, then I'm not really wasting money, I'm just drawing from a fun pool. What I started to do was then rationalize like this: "Oh, there's a Centipede for sale. I'll sell Satan's Hollow and use that money for the new game." But then I would get the new game first and not get around to selling Satan's Hollow.
I'm not saying I'm better than the Star Citizen buyers or that the Star Citizen buyers are doing something wrong. I did at least get a tangible item at the end of my obsession but I wonder how much the physical item matters. Certainly one of the extremely fun aspects of getting the arcade games was leaving the house, arranging transportation, going into crazy areas to pull a game out and getting it downstairs. Sometimes a friend would tag along. The SC guys are paying money for something that is at least 50% in their imagination, but if the process is fun for them, I get it.
