I can't really bring myself to accept that this is happening, but fuck CNN basically. I understand that we have a stupid partisan media, but I shouldn't be seeing everything but fox failing to recall that the situation has a history, that Ataturk set the esprit de corps of the new army up as a check on civilian and clerical power because that was what worked. And now the insane asshole at the helm got his Reichstag fire and used it as an excuse to beat a bunch of young conscripts to death and perform a purge of the military, so if they become a one-party state the oldest existing stable, secular muslim nation in the world is gonna become the kind of place where the cops get called in to break up your banned gay parade with rubber bullets and water cannon because those fags are somehow a threat. I can't find much indication that the army was involved in crushing the rainbow uprising. People I know in turkey talk exclusively about how they've been wary of their leader trying to consolidate power into an imperial presidency for some time now. And the US president is cool with that, he's fine playing them against Putin like he's behind a cold-war chessboard. If there was ever an effective argument that Obama isn't a muslim, it's how bad this position is for islam. The BBC, MSNBC, NPR should be all over this shit. This is a country that secularized an islamic population in a fashion that guaranteed stability given the behavior of muslim societies - it gave the military the job of maintaining a lasting democracy. And somehow, when their insane leader starts playing chicken with mother bear, we end up folding him into a proxy war with the Russians as if he's a democratic reformer? What, did we need some sort of replacement for Saddam? |
