Forum Overview :: Demon's Souls

Overall: Great. Everyone that likes these games should own it by Rafiki 04/30/2016, 12:04pm PDT
Biggest Complaints:

1) Several bosses are too easy. I liked the design of the bosses, and there's a couple of really tough ones, but overall too easy. Granted, I played with a shield with 100% physical damage absorption. They might be more vicious if you're not using a shield
2) Bonfire frequency is to the point that they're basically checkpoints. There's shortcut unlocking back to a central bonfire or a recent one, but in most cases they're now checkpoints throughout a single area, even late in the game. It's downright ridiculous sometimes how frequent they are. It eliminates the tension of super long stretches wondering whether you can reach a boss or a new bonfire before your healing items run out. Oh, made it another 30 feet? CHECKPOINT!
3) There's 3 pvp covenants that auto-summon you to other worlds (Darkmoon, Watchdogs, Aldrich), but Darkmoon and Watchdogs never summoned me ever. Watchdogs is a low-level covenant, but still. Alrdich, on the other hand, summons about every 5 seconds and you can get to rank 30 in no time.

I'm probably making it sound worse than it is, like the game is some kind of cakewalk. It's still difficult, and I died a number of times, but not on the same level as Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1. I will concede that I might be biased because I've played through 4 of these games now, so I'm sure that makes a huge difference in challenge. I spent the same amount of time finishing this game as the others, so it's not like I breezed through it.

And there are so many gorgeous levels and bosses, the art direction knocked it out of the park. Visually, I think my two favorite bosses are Pontiff Sulyvahn (for him and the room you fight in) and Dancer of the Boreal Valley. I tried looking for decent YouTube videos to link, but they're all kind of shit quality that dull the details. Also, several of them have assholes in the corner because god knows it's important to overlay yourself into the content when you're sitting there stoic and have zero charisma.

Cathedral of the Deep is the best area in the game and one of the best in the series, and comes the closest to what I liked about Souls' levels/areas, re: central bonfire and unlocking shortcuts back to it. It's also one of the hardest areas in the game.
