BC.
It's a chance at a mostly-bloodless revolution and an opportunity to stave off dictatorship for a century or so. If you think Trump is distasteful or lowbrow or whatever, wait til you see the guy that comes after Hillary. That's the guy you should be shitting your pants over.

If Sanders got the kind of free press that the news gives Trump nightly, he'd be a landside winner. Well, which is it? Does media scrutiny help or hurt? Trump took real risks with his positions and his "free press" came in the form of 24/7 denunciation from the media.
Sanders could have tried saying something other than "free shit for losers" and "rich people are to blame." It's the same commie claptrap that's been destroying nations for the last century, and it's only offensive to people above a certain intelligence threshold. Trump took the opposite tack (courting the intelligent / offending the dogmatic) by going after actual sacred cows, like multiculturalism.
Intellectually offensive = boring.
Viscerally offensive = awesome.
I'm reminded of when French voters were stuck with the choice between crooked Chirac and fascist Le Pen and they went to the polls wearing latex gloves or wearing clothes pins on their noses.
I'm reminded of the scene at the end of every movie about a campaign where the candidate drops his act and speaks his heart to widespread acclaim. Except that Trump's been doing it since the beginning, and most people have needed 6-9 months to figure out how they should feel about it. |
