A mirror of the comment, for when steam deletes the above thread:

The first truly great Metal Gear Solid game. 1 is old and dated and had love blooming on the battlefield, 2 had Raiden and an awful story, 3 had the camo system and The Sorrow fight (which ruined the entire game) and an awful story, 4 had almost no gameplay because of the awful story cutscenes about nanomachines, Peace Walker was on the dead consoles. This game dumps all the mistakes of the previous game and does something that makes it superior to all of the other MGS games: it rips off Assassin's Creed, Far Cry 3, and Skyrim/Fallout 3 (with a dose of Just Cause 2 sprinkled in). The story is still awful, but there's way less of it getting in the way of the gameplay, which is why all the other MGS games were never truly great (they were fun to play in spite of their cutscenes and story).
You can take it from me, someone who played all of the previous MGS games but was objective about their quality. You can't trust any MGS fan because they don't know what they're talking about and have terrible taste in art and video games (proof: they like anime). This review will upset them because they know I'm right.
I clocked in 200 hours in this game and got every achievement, and it wasn't even that difficult, because with that delicious Far Cry 3/Assassin's Creed gameplay, it makes the game pretty fun.
PS: I played all 200+ hours of this game entirely with the Steam controller, and at least 190 of those hours using Steam Link. They worked great. I did need to use right grip as a mode shifter so I could toggle the suppressors or flashlights (the G and T keys) but other than that, worked great, 100% the entire game entirely with the Steam controller. The Steam controller is officially real.
