This morning around 2AM I recognized I was about to have a bowel movement, and since I'd just had one a few hours earlier - a bad one that produced a kit if diarrhea - I didn't have much hope for this one. Since I knew I was going to have a bad incident I took all my clothes off, since I figured there'd be a strong probability I'd have to bathe afterward. I was right. I had flooded my diaper with the usual blue-black foam and then had more results, to the point it was pouring out of me, over my chair and drooling on the floor. So, first I was using toilet paper and wet wipes to at least clean up me and the chair to some extent before I bathed.
Then, because I didn't want to track the liquefied shit I had expelled back into my room or on the carpet in the living room when I would take the dirty diaper out of the house and put it in the outside trash can, I was trying to use toilet paper to mop up the pools of shit from the floor and my chair wheels, I made a bad mistake. I was reaching down to wipe up the pools of, well, poo, that had accumulated on the floor. Not realizing that I was essentially covered in shit from the ass down, I slid off the chair and fell on the floor, the first time I ave ever fallen out of a power chair in the more than six years I've owned one (and used it every single day). Because I was taking a dump I was, of course, not belted into the chair.
I mean, I have fallen before - and more than once - when in a wheelchair, but they've always been manual chairs, and "controlled falls" where I was in a manual wheelchair and something went wrong such that I missed on a transfer to something else, and controlled the fall into a gentle, slow descent onto the floor. I've never had an actual "crash" type of fall before. Nor have I ever missed getting in and out of, or slipped while in, a power chair. Not once, not in the entire 6+ years of daily use.
So I fell out of the chair and ended up on the stone floor in the bathroom where I'm covered in shit. Fortunately, as a policy because one time I went to the store and forgot my wallet, I now leave it attached to the seat belt on my chair. My "wallet" is a set of containers that are linked together by straps, consisting of a large bag which I keep a small amount of cash and an emergency cell phone, a smaller hard case wallet that carries my ID and credit cards, a soft wallet that contains flashlights and my main cell phone, and an ID carrier with my Metro Access photo ID so I can ride the bus and train for free.
So I get to my main cell phone and can look up one of the other people in the house to call them twice before I am able to wake them up, and tell them I've had an emergency and explain that I need the front door unlocked immediately and ask if he can do that for me. Since he can, I call 9-1-1 to have them send some paramedics since I can't lift myself up and I will need at least a couple people, especially if it turns out I have to go to the hospital again, which I'm hoping is not the case; all I need is having to spend another $95 for an ambulance to bring me back home.
While we're waiting, my friend helps me out, moving my power wheelchair out of the way so the paramedics can get into the room, giving me one of my washcloths, wet with soap so I can wash my hands and arms as well as, to some extent, my crotch and my balls. I mean, I look like I've been playing in the mud, nude. The floor - and me! - is covered in black diarrhea and there is a blood area about the size of a couple dollar bills where I presume I cut something when I fell.
So the paramedics show up and they put some sheets down, and I crawl to my bed, where they put a pull cloth under my arms and lift me the 2 feet or so from the floor to my mattress, my friend gives me another washcloth so I can clean my legs, crotch, and balls again, so that we can discover where the bleeding is coming from and if I'm still bleeding. There are two things I decided: if I had struck my head I would have had them take me to the hospital, same if I was still bleeding. Tuned out it was my foot that bled, I probably cut it, but other than a few drops it had leaked a little or traces of the bkood it leaked when it git cut, it wasn't bleeding now.
So they bandage my foot and I state that if I find it's still bleeding I will call them to take me to the hospital. Which, if it was the case, I would. So they leave and I'm basically a little sore and have a dime-sized bruise on the top of my left hand about 1/2 inch below the webbing between the thumb and forefinger.
At least until the police show up.
Apparently someone - could be one of the other roommates or it could be the paramedics although I don't know why - called 9-1-1 to report the place as unsafe or uninhabitable. Some county cops showed up for what reason I don't know. Nobody even comes in my room and I guess they see the place isn't a pigsty and they leave.
My friend comes back down in the morning - it was too cold to do it last night - and mops the room and bathroom for me.
The landlord calls, someone told him about the ruckus and how there's questions about the place being unfit for habitation.. So I tell him the truth, I had a diarrhea incident, I was cleaning myself up before bathing, and I tried cleaning up the stuff that oozed off my chair so I wouldn't track it but I slid off and fell. I pointed out that if the paramedics saw anything, it was a naked handicapped man sitting on the floor in his own shit, which would be the case if you had had a diarrhea incident and had fallen out of your chair trying to clean up after yourself. So he understood.
So, new rule, I don't care why, unless I am either having to remove a diaper / immediately taking a dump, putting on pants or are intentionally getting in or out of the chair, the seat belt us to be applied at all times, I will belt myself immediately after boarding the chair or doing personal matters. I normally do this anyway. I normally don't leave my room unless I'm locked in via the seat belt. I just hadn't thought that if I'm leaning over cleaning up shit off the floor I am leaning over and I'm risking a fall incident, which is what happened.
