Super Mario Maker IS GOOD by Rafiki 09/27/2015, 8:54pm PDT
It starts off with total fan service by dumping you in 1-1 of Super Mario Bros., forcing you to die with an incomplete level, then teaching you how to use the editor by having you complete the course. Then you can start creating your own levels from scratch or go online and play others.

The editor itself is super simple to use, and one of the few legit reasons for the Wii-U touchscreen to exist. Level lengths are adjustable to a minimum of one "screen," all the way up to....long. I guess about the length of a typical SMB1 level. You can also have multiple areas and chain them together, but I'm not sure what the limitations are on that. Levels can only be 2 "screens" high, so no long vertical levels. The one surprising thing about the editor is that you can combine nearly every option to create new effects, as well as 'shake' things to change how they function, so it pays just to sit around and experiment to see what works and what doesn't and what effect it has. I was wondering how to create giant enemies, and it turns out all I had to do was just drag a mushroom onto one in the editor.

The one big con of the editor is that, by default, it limits you to 12 options. 4 blocks, 4 enemies, a pipe, a springboard, a mushroom, and a coin. Everything else you have to unlock. Flowers, stars, new enemies, vines, warp pipes, the ability to chain locations together (which is why I don't know what the limitations are on that yet), and so on. You unlock things either by simply building levels and using things, or things automatically unlock on a daily schedule. I think the intent was to keep you from being overwhelmed with too many options and encourage you to experiment, which with a huge number of options and the ability to combine things is sorta kinda valid, but it's a little bit bullshit given how restrictive the starting options are. I think it's also a ploy just to get you to play the game every day, like Animal Crossing. I guess you can also unlock special items if you buy Amiibos, but fuck all that.

The top community levels are BULLSHIT. I was expecting to have to slog through a never-ending stream of Kaizo Mario levels, but the top 20 or so levels I tried are all just novelty levels that literally play themselves or don't require you to do anything but run. Swear to god. There's multiple levels in the top 20 with "don't press anything" in the title. A couple of them are kind of neat just for the spectacle, but I wish I could filter them out. The fun of Mario is the part where you get to play, not putting the controller down so you can watch Mario bounce through a Rube-Goldberg machine. The upside is that this should make it easier for me to launch my hot-shit designer career and become the king of video games. I'll keep you posted on my assuredly meteoric rise in the Mario level design community. In contrast to my flatlined career in the Left 4 Dead level design community.
