Here's half a review from a friend of mine who I mostly trust:
+The movie believes in showing, not telling. Not a single line of dialogue is wasted describing the world where an image will do.
+ George Miller wanted to make sure his movie properly portrayed women living in a savage world, so he hired the author of the Vagina Monologues as a consultant to tell the actresses how lousy their lives would be in that society, allegedly telling them every awful rape story she knew. The movie offers better-rounded and more interesting female characters than any other film I've seen of late.
+ The visuals come from the fever-dream of a time-traveling schizophrenic. Religious fanatics swing on pendulums to attack an 18-wheeler with hedge-trimmers. Damned souls stalk mudlands on stilts. Amazon snipers headshot motorcycle mutants in stark desert sun.
+ Doof warrior. Doof warrior's flamethrower guitar. Doof wagon. Doof wagon's truckload of drummers providing background percussion.
Thing is, I trust Caltrops more than that guy. I'm going to guess that the central plot of the film is about some asshole who has beliefs about needing to rescue princesses that are out of place in the context of the society he's in because you gotta pander to the modern audience and their sissy values. What's wrong with the film? I refuse to believe we've had a streak of good action movies including Looper and Tom Cruise Gets Run Over without evidence and I won't have time to see this in theaters for at least a week. |
