Honestly, I see it going the way of trying to prevent self-service (see: printers, coffee makers). Gadgets with built snitch switches to continue planned obsolescence, and maintenance markups.
Does it even have to be planned? One of the promises of the "internet of everything" was that software updates would help keep older models from becoming dated. Even if it's true, nobody's shown an interest in keeping dated hardware. They'd rather chuck it and buy the latest model of whatever gadget. There have been tons of news stories of how stores throw out functional goods because the latest upgrade is out and who wants to be behind the curve?
No, I suppose not. It's sad that the hype of new model+ is all it takes to shovel more units. If I want a phone, then I want a shitphone that makes calls, and text. I can't care about apps and games in my hand at all times to babysit. Sure as shit don't want that in a vehicle, or any home appliance.

I wonder if the obsession with VR is like the film industry's obsession with 3D with the same result - the public never reaches the enthusiasm that they hoped for.
Even if they meet that enthusiasm it's so easy to burn out a gimmick. How can VR be important, and not just another toy to mug your face with? I'm not even 30, and this oversaturation is getting to me. |
