Were they paying the creators of these mods anything?
Yeah, that was the deal, although the percentages kind of gave modders the shaft in case of Skyrim. Valve took 30%, like mobile app stores, and Bethesda decided to take 45%, with the modder getting 25%. I understand Valve taking a cut for distribution and Bethesda taking a cut because what business wants to compete with DLC from people piggybacking off of them, but getting 25% out of what is likely to be a tiny market anyways seems like a hosejob. Apparently Bethesda could have set their cut to whatever they wanted, though.
I'm sure paid mods will get reintroduced, and it doesn't bother me a bit that modders might want to actually make money off of their work.
There was paid modding in the world of Front Page Sports: Football Pro (a great PC football game that is still better than the Madden shit EA puts out.) It was awkward as fuck. The guys can charge whatever they want, you're buying shit from just a dude, there's not really support in terms of a stable website or forum. There's no way to get the stuff back if you lose it. OK, typing all this out, it seems like Valve could help here but I think the mentality is as follows: "I bought this game at $60 and modding was part of the deal. You are changing the deal by now charging for mods."
Which is fine except that tons of people wait for the Steam sale and they aren't paying $60 any more. (Though some.... most? are.)
I guess the thing that sucks is that free mods was a nice thing about PC gaming. A friend working on a text game interpreter told me that you have to pay money to Apple to not have to "whitelist" a program to run on OSX. That's the greatest piece of horseshit in the technological world, now that I am aware of it. I guess the paid modding was perceived as another way that people are ruining the PC platform. I dunno, would be interesting to hear from non-lunatics here on America's favorite purple website.
(Did they at least launch with new, never-before-seen mods?)
