Beyond just shocks too, to make you actually afraid of death. I thought that was something RE4 got right. You were scared of dying, and it was a combination of not only having to restart at the last typewriter but also seeing poor Leon be brutalized because of your mistake. Dunno what to tell you about Sniper Elite or Mortal Kombat though.
