The rift tracking is pretty ass in terms of the volume covered. An IR camera sits on top of the monitor and you have to be in its FOV to get head tracking, so the nearness of the monitor makes it limited. I know Carmack has been working on inside-out tracking where tracking camera(s) would be inside the headset. That would allow mobile VR like Samsung's Gear to have full head tracking with no wires coming out of your head.
