The combat blows. Enemies never get stronger as the game goes on but you do, so the intro tutorial chapter ends up being the hardest part of the game! After that the only challenge is the boss fights which are universally terrible, even worse than Arkham Asylum. The first one against the swamp monster is long, tedious, and free from challenge UNTIL you get to the end where it's a protracted QTE with small hard to read icons and failing one sets you all the way back to the beginning for another slog. The next boss is the beefy assassin dude (how did Gerhalt thwart any previous assassination attempts when he ineptly turned his back to the GIANT MENACING HULK pretending to be a monk?) and he has all sorts of "fuck you" moves that give the middle finger to any attempt at technique.
The plot gets less and less interesting as the game goes on. The final chapter is supposed to be some delicate pivotal historic shit but it feels so much smaller in scale than anything else in the game. Instead of lots of little plot branches like the first game, they went with two big branches that are triggered by nothing but choosing who to help in a pointless fight. Who the fuck would choose to help the asshole elf who tried to kill you?
The inventory, crafting, and potion systems are all terrible. You're better off completely ignoring alchemy and crafting since they're not that great and it means you don't have to ever bother with looting and hording. All crafting does is get you armor & weapons slightly better than what's in the shops in the first chapter. After that you just stumble across chests with stuff better than anything you can craft. |
