Also, for a movie that had a runtime of nearly 3 hours, there were parts of the plot that felt rushed. Particularly the first act with McGillicutty leaving his family. There were some good ideas, but they just weren't executed all that well. I think if this were a TV series on HBO or something with more time to expand on things it probably could have been pretty good.
Here is the part where I nitpick things and bitch like some sort of jerkass. All kinds of spoilers including bits from the end of the movie!
- what was the point of hijacking the drone. He said the fuel cell could power the farm and loaded it into his pickup and everything, but after that I don't remember it being relevant for the rest of the movie. He didn't even bring it up to the gubmint.
- the first thing they learned from the magical books was the GPS coordinates of Norad. Then later his daughter said she decoded the message into something different. Huh? Do the GPS coordinates of Norad and the word "STAY" decode to the same thing in binary? At the end of the movie, when McGarnagle is using bibliocode to talk to his daughter the coordinates don't come up. Sooooo....how does that work out? Why did the coordinates come up?
- Why was it EVEN necessary to mention McBane was the BEST pilot they ever had? Could that BE any more hackneyed, and it would have been just fine and totally true if they said he was the only living trained pilot with both real flight and real space flight experience.
- When they were approaching the wormhole one of the astronauts asked Mclusky to stop spinning so they could see it better, which would have disabled the ship's gravity but it didn't. Whoops!
- When everyone was strapped in and they were approaching the wormhole, it irritated me that no one was tensing up and borderline shitting themselves bracing for a completely unknown experience. Instead, everyone was dead calm with their mouth slightly agape, like, "whoooooooooooooooah." They're about to leap through spacetime and none of them are the slightest bit apprehensive about what the sensation might be like?
- When they landed on the water planet and showed the horizon, I instantly knew there was a tsunami. Was everyone else retarded? And how could they not spot that while landing?
- The conversation about love transcending space and time reminded me of the scene from Adaptation where Donald tells Charlie about his love for a girl that made fun of him.
- When they opened up the Uncle Ben's Boil in Bag Hypersleep Chamber on the ice planet and saw it was Matt Damon, why didn't they close it back up and then kick it over a cliff?
- Matt Damon's character irrationally ignoring and overriding 80 million security warnings and automatic lockdowns has to be one of the dumbest and most infuriating movie moments in the last 10 years. The more I think about this movie, the more it comes off as half-baked. Christopher Nolan went from The Dark Knight and Inception to The Dark Knight Rises and now this. :(
- Speaking of rushed moments, the ending with his daughter.
- And why did they bother to have a scene where they took him to his recreated house that he was in for 2 seconds before going to see his daughter and then stealing a spaceship to fly away in?
