I've played 4x games that don't require me to do things that the Civ formula demands, like micromanaging every hex of territory in an interlocking grid of cities with endless build queues and endless hordes of units I have to individually tinker with every turn if I want to win. Hour-long turns aren't so great, but fixing this by only playing on tiny maps goes against the grain of a genre that's defined by expansion and exploration.
The civ game formula seen outside of SMAC is tried and true in the sense of its ability to make money, sure. It's not tried and true in terms of its ability to generate fun. Other 4x titles do it better, though they differ from it sufficiently to hardly be recognizable as part of the genre. Which is because civ's repetitive formula defines that genre.
What people are pissed about is not the game itself
People here are right to say that you're having a failure of imagination here, I'm plenty pissed that I can't do anything strategic in this game, or that I have to play with a clunky interface, or that the scale explodes because of design flaws that make the whole experience of playing about diminishing returns.
It's not unfair for me to go one step further and compare the game to everything else I know of in the series or even the genre, it is natural. You can't argue your way around pattern recognition. |
