When people say to friends, "Holy shit! You still haven't seen the Redlettermedia Star Wars reviews? Let's pull them up right now!" they're not doing that because they're eager to feel disappointed together. Hans Clastorp wanted to have a fun argument about this shitty game because that's the only way he can get some satisfaction out of the money he wasted on it!
I think the point that you and pinback seem to miss is that Caltrops is actually a wonderful and positive place built on the principle of "pay it forward." One or two of us takes the plunge and spends some money on a game of questionable value. If the game sucks, they come back to the site and tear it to shreds. When other Caltrops posters consider buying a game, they do a site search for that game's name and make their decision.
This actually happened for me this morning. Infested Planet hit gog today with a release discount and it's totally the kind of game I'd spend money on. Thankfully Fabio set aside "fun" and chopped it down a couple weeks ago. Now I'm not going to lose time and money on a shitty game and can spend those resources on something more fun. Similarly, I took the plunge and tried Conquest of Elysium and EVEN THOUGH it's by the guys who made Dominions, one of my favorite 4Xs of all time, I set aside "fun" and rightfully chopped down that game and its boneheaded attempt to marry roguelike with competitive strategy, so Fabio saved his money in that case.
