I had been avoiding Bridget Jones's Diary because it was both a "chick flick" and a romantic comedy, but that was clearly a grievous error. A film all the members of the household can enjoy, except for children. Three stars for British wit and being based on a novel, plus another half-star for the slop to the guys in the audience of a knock-down drag out brawl involving meaty punches and slow-motion crashings through window-panes. The token poofty friend of Bridget's actually rushes into a crowded restaurant and shrieks, "A fight! It's a real fight!" and of course everyone comes running. Another half a star for Salman Rushdie's cameo. Four stars out of five. |
