While I love Frozen Synapse, it's basic order-issuing system is different. In FS, everything is real-time turn based. That means you allot orders in 3-second (or whatever) increments and can't tell your dudes to do shit outside the turn limits. Door Kickers is real-time with pause, so if you hear a door open you can dive in and spin your trooper around. The reason I'm comparing it to UG:Gettysburg is that I've traditionally hated games like Total War, just like I've hated games using real-time with pause. Door Kickers, like Gettysburg, showed me that an exceptional interface massaged into the game mechanics can be a watershed moment for genres I thought just weren't for me.
Door Kickers has so much content that it's unimaginable to run out, controlling everything feels slick, and your little dudes have that little bit of soft independence that makes a game of drawing paths on a floor plan for a swat team to follow fun instead of exhausting. The dynamic of drawing up a plan and then diving in and modifying it as conditions change, or sketching out the beginnings of one and then kinda ad-hoc'ing it as you go, or going for a medal by just controlling a single trooper by hand in real time works great no matter how much prep you want to do before hitting the Go button.
