I remembered this as being one of the hardest games EVER CREATED, but it turns out it's not so bad. It's weird that 8-year old me could plow through difficult NES games, but other ones like Castlevania seemed impossible even though it's mostly pretty reasonable. I think I flew through to the Grim Reaper in about a half hour, and could even still remember every enemy placement and secret, even though I hadn't been exposed to the game in 20 years. Take that, formal education.
I'm surprised how well the game holds up. It's still really fun and pretty fair. The most bullshit things are the stork/hunchback blitz right before Dracula, Igor, and the game always trying to shove the clock or the goddamn dagger into your inventory right before a boss when you're trying to hang onto triple-shot boomerang or holy water.
NEXT TARGET ON MY HIT LIST: Castlevania 3.
I already beat Castlevania 2 a million times when I was a kid, both the black and white ending AND the secret color ending. I have to say, I like this game more than most people. Everyone complains about how it doesn't explain item purposes and how you have to know insane things like ducking next to a river with the blue crystal for 5 seconds, and it's totally legit. But I guess I'm biased by nostalgia and already knowing all that stuff, so I think it's a pretty decent game.
I played this game so many times I mapped out the fastest routes to collect items and beat mansions and would practice at it. If I could remember all that shit (take that, first paragraph), I'd probably be a champion Castlevania 2 speedrunner and I could finally quit my job and land a hot wife and have lots of money, the way speedrunners do. |
