-Thanks to the addition of a dash button, the default controls in all of these games are FUCKING AWFUL. You absolutely HAVE to set the dash button to R1 unless you have claws or don't care about holding a charge and dodging at the same time. I believe they knew this, which is why they included an option to switch the buttons starting with X1. I guess they figured that while dashing with R1 would make more sense, they HAD to make L1 and R1 change weapons since that just LOOKS more intuitive.
-I did play through the Mega Man collection a few months ago, but I didn't think to take any notes on it. They were all great fun, none was a fucking chore like some of these X games, but definitely not perfect. Mega Man 1 was fucking bullshit sometimes (every boss faq just said to use a damage glitch that had since been removed) and the fact that Mega Man 2's Wily World required you to kill yourself once you ran out of energy was just SUPER bullshit The very first wily stage you need the climber AND the hover specials. If you're not PRECISE with your platforming, you'll be grinding out energy for a few minutes. It's even worse in a later stage where you HAVE TO have the Crush Man weapon to be able to reach the boss. I can't remember which one, but there's one of the PS1 Mega Man games where you're snowboarding and this SCREECHING voice just repeatedly yells at you to JUMP JUMP JUMP DUCK DUCK DUCK JUMP JUMP JUMP DASH DASH DASH to avoid instant death.
-A lot of the issues with the music fading out are unique to the collection, even for the PS1 games.
-It might have been implied from the X1 writeup, but NONE of the later games have ANY of those wonderful details that made that game such a delight. Enemies don't chuckle when they hit you and killing one boss won't completely change the setup of later bosses. Even the boss select screen is shittier. Whereas X-X3 let you see a map of where all these dudes and levels were in relation to each other, the PS1 games just have you in a DANGER ROOM. It feels like the baffling increase in story focus just kept sucking the life out of every other aspect of the game. |
